Our Vision

Providing shelter, material and spiritual resources for female survivors of domestic violence, based on Christ's ministry to women.

Our Mission

Using the Bible as the foundation for trauma care and a survivor-centered approach, we bring healing and purpose to female survivors of domestic violence so they can live fulfilled lives. Our services include vocational and craft training, psycho-social support, Word-based group therapy sessions, and mentoring.

Why We Exist

Our Purpose

Grace's Place Shelter exists to interrupt the cycle of domestic violence in the lives of Nigerian women and their children — replacing fear with safety, silence with support, and survival with a future. We open our doors, and our hearts, so that every woman who walks through them leaves not just sheltered, but restored: equipped in skill, sound in mind, and secure in her God-given worth.

We believe Christians should be on the front line in the war against domestic violence — a form of oppression the Bible speaks firmly against. Jesus Christ came explicitly to set the oppressed free, and Hebrews 13:3 calls us to remember those who are mistreated. That conviction is why we chose our specific level of intervention: shelter, Christian counselling, group therapy, trauma care and mediation, delivered by a team trained to understand the fallout and complexity of domestic violence within a Biblical framework.

Why It Matters

The scale of the need in Nigeria

Acts of violence against women in Nigeria cut across religion, social class and ethnic group. Despite progress made by government, tens of millions of women and girls remain affected.

Contributing factors include social norms, economic stress, family relations, patriarchal beliefs and targeted assertions against female autonomy (Dataphyte.com, Paul Adeyeye).

Our Core Beliefs

The Church's Role

We believe the church has a critical role in these times, and that it should take the lead in social change.

The Word of God

We believe the Bible is the only infallible Word of God, and that there is one God, eternally existent as the Trinity — Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Lord Jesus Christ

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, vicarious death and bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of God the Father, and His return in glory.

The Holy Spirit & the Church

We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit, His gifts, and the spiritual union of all believers in our Lord.

Skills that rebuild independence

We equip every survivor with practical, income-generating skills alongside spiritual and emotional care.

Vocational Training

In-house small-scale vocational training equips survivors with practical skills to generate their own income.

Weekly Arts & Crafts Day

A weekly arts and crafts programme builds small, sellable skills — and gives space for creativity and joy to return.

One-on-One Mentoring

Every survivor is paired with a personal mentor to sharpen life skills and pursue her God-given goals.

Our Story

How Grace's Place began

A story rooted in one conviction — that no woman fleeing violence should ever have nowhere safe to go.

2015 · A Calling, Answered

Grace's Place Shelter was founded in 2015 as a Christian response to the scale of domestic violence against Nigerian women — a conviction rooted in Hebrews 13:3, to remember those who are mistreated. We chose our level of intervention carefully: shelter, Christian counselling, group therapy, trauma care and mediation, delivered within a Biblical framework.

Registered & Accountable

The Shelter is registered with the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) and the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, working within a formal, accountable framework for survivor care.

An Open, Homely Shelter

Survivors stay with us for an average of one night to six months. Ours is an open shelter — women are encouraged to continue routine domestic chores, and their regular work, education or business, wherever it is safe to do so — alongside sessions with our clinical psychologist, Christian counselling, group therapy and creative therapy. We also collaborate with other NGOs for empowerment as the need arises.

September 2023 · Governor's Award

The Lagos State DSVA awarded Grace's Place Shelter a Certificate of Recognition via the Governor's Award, honouring our commitment to eradicating sexual and gender-based violence.
